Academy Award Hits and Misses

The stars graciously aligned with all the glitz and glam on the Red Carpet. Actresses looked fierce with embellished gowns reminiscent of proms past, while the actors looked suave in their penguin suits. The underdog winner, The Hurt Locker, baffled Avatar hopefuls, as they carried home a whopping six Oscars – talk about a clean sweep.

Barbara Streisand gave props to Katheryn Bigelow for being the first female to win Best Director stating, “The time has come.” Katheryn looked fabulous in her skin-tight dress and carrying her newly earned golden dumbbells.

We were nearly in tears when our personal pick for Best Dressed, the humble Sandra Bullock, received her first Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in The Blind Side.

Bullock was the definition of flawless, adorning a metallic and lace Marchesa gown. Her structured gown captured the light beautifully and shined with beauty similar to that of old Hollywood glam. Her sleek straight hair with a freshly powdered face – along with a dab of bright lipstick – was the perfect contrast to her sheer-floral dress. Bullock’s respectful call-out to her peer nominees reminded us she has both inner and outer beauty. Bullock mentioned past Oscar winners as inspiration in her acceptance speech. Ironically, the week prior InStyle Magazine featured special Oscars relationships; role models for eventual Academy Award winners. Couplings included Reese Witherspoon and Renee Zellweger, Whoopi Goldberg and Halle Berry, Kate Winslet and Jodie Foster, and Anjelica Huston and Sissy Spacek.

    * Reese Witherspoon’s go-to-gal for taming her pre-Oscar win anxiety was none other than Renee Zellweger. Everyday calls went Zellweger’s way as the day loomed closer.
    * Halle Berry admitted her strong admiration of Whoopi Goldberg’s authenticity and confidence.
    * Winslet credited Foster’s idea of “Be” ing the character as opposed to “Act” ing a role for having paved the way for her Oscar win.
    * Houston and Spacek joked about worrying to the point of sweating before their big wins! I guess winning isn’t as glamorous as it seems.

You don’t have to be an Oscar recipient to be a fashion winner on the Oscar Red Carpet. Presenters wowed us with their style and here are a few of our Red Carpet style winners and misses.

Hits:
Rachel McAdams fantastically demure look will not soon be forgotten. Her Ellis Saab dress was a perfect piece of watercolor artwork and complimented her skin tone wonderfully. The gown featured swirls of muted blues, pinks, and greens which added a fresh touch to the voluminous gown. To look just as demure by the pool, try any of the ella moss bathing suits

Cameron Diaz’s gorgeous Oscar de la Renta strapless tulle gown glittered with silver and gold. The intricate beading on Cameron’s show-stopping gown was paired with a red lip, which added even more brightness to that $1,000,000 smile.

Misses:
We’re not big fans of the layers and layers of heavy fabric draped on fit celebs. If they’re sweating away the pounds in preparation for bikini-loving weather, they shouldn’t cover up their bikini-ready bods. We’re favoring gowns with an embellished bodice that show off toned arms.

Jennifer Lopez was swimming in her light pink Armani gown which featured crescent shapes and layers all pinned to one side. The dress started on track with a form fitting bodice but once you got past the waistline there was way too much volume, which threw off her usually beautiful curves.

Vera Farmiga looked like a pink scallop with her ruffled fuchsia gown. She missed out on the Best Actress award but is most definitely in the running for worst dressed. On a side note, her make up was beautiful and we are yearning to get that shade of lipstick, which ironically matched the dress we weren’t so keen on.

Charlize Theron was the talk of Hollywood with the suggestive placement of roses on the John Galliano gown she wore Sunday night. She stands by her dress choice, while most critics say she could do better. She did hit the pastel trend on the “bulls-eye,” – no pun intended – but next time point the arrow’s eye in a different direction.

We’ve shared our faves and not-so-fave looks, now which looks from the Oscars did you all think was an iconic hit or a miss?
