Advisory Board - Tips on How to Pick the Perfect Swimsuit

Curious about what’s “On Trend” for 2010? SwimSpot’s Advisory Board has all the tips and tricks to help you pick out the perfect bikini! Soak up their rays of wisdom and let them become part of your fashion world!

Adriana’s style tip:
One of my favorite sophisticated, runway inspired looks is the Met Maillot in Navy from LUXE by Lisa Vogel’s  2010 collection.  This is a great look for those who have a little more curve in their bottom than top. The plunge neckline also helps elongate the torso. Pair this suit up with a sexy straw hat, big earrings, bold bangles and strappy sandals for a “city chic meets poolside perfection” look.

Dana’s style tip:
Summertime has been extended into a year-round experience with trendy fashionistas jetting off to the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Miami, Vegas, and even the south of France. One big nouveau trend we are seeing at the moment is sexy animal prints in swimwear.  The key to wearing this trend is finding a print that suits your body frame best.  Petite women should opt for smaller animal prints as to not over-power their frame.  Taller women can sport larger prints since the pattern is in proportion to their body. The current Guess Collection features ultra-flattering leopard, snakeskin and cat-like patterns in a variety of cuts for all body shapes. I adore the Guess Cats Meow Banded Halter Top and Retro Bottom.  The halter top with its shimmering sequin accents is designed to especially flatter the bust line. The fringed Cats Meow Retro Bottom can be easily adjusted at the waist and hip in order to flatter the wearer. Grrrrr! Ladies, you certainly will be the cats meow wearing this suit!

Katty’s style tip:
Every girl has a little black dress in her wardrobe. It’s the perfect fall back for a first date or making your ex jealous! The Simply Solid One Piece Cutout Swimsuit by Splendid is the poolside little black dress! With the suit’s open back exposure you can show off your backside and fresh tan while looking chic. And just like when you wear your little black dress, the accessories are key! Add a couple bangles, an oversized cocktail ring, and of course a pair of sunglasses. Be sure to throw all your must-haves for your lounge time into a fun and flirty tote. Now dive into the season with your new little black swimsuit.

Thea’s style tip:
Botanical prints, like their living, growing counterparts, come back year after year. This spring, Liberty prints—those dainty florals reminiscent of Laura Ashley bedding and the English countryside—are really coming to a head, sprucing up ready-to-wear from trend-vendors like Topshop and H&M; also, mark your iCal: Liberty of London for Target, in stores March 14th! Liberty prints are even creeping onto swimwear. Take for example the adorable Pretty Tough Bandeau Top and Strip Bikini Bottom by Hurley. Unlike bold colors or large-scale prints, these florals won’t distort or exaggerate your curves, so it’s a no-brainer way to rock a hot trend without sacrificing personal style. Try saying that about last summer’s chartreuse romper.

In terms of fashion, this is definitely my favorite time of year – I especially love the bold pops of color that are trending this season. And of course, the layers! But unfortunately, being bundled up in sweaters and coats doesn’t quite give me the motivation to work out. I won’t be sporting a bikini any time soon anyways so what’s the point, right? Wrong! We’re all aiming for that perfect beach body once Spring rolls along, so why not start working for it now? Getting toned and fit is a gradual process—although I’m sure we all wish it would happen overnight.
