In spirit of this week’s “Dancing with the Stars” premiere and in hopes of maintaining this past summer’s bathing suit “physique”, we decided to look into the benefits of taking our love for dancing to another level. At SwimSpot we feel it’s important to stay active but from time to time we find ourselves unmotivated by our rather mundane fitness routines. After doing some research we are pleased to report back that shaking your groove thang can in fact be a low impact cardio workout!
Don’t let dancing fool you, just because it is a fun way to get your heart rate going doesn’t mean it is any less advantageous than step class, swimming, or walking. Just 30 minutes of dancing can burn as many calories as these other cardio induced activities. Using dance as a workout not only improves physical health by building endurance and increasing strength, but enhances mental health as well. It is a great way to relieve stress and have fun with your friends, family, or significant other. Overall, getting a good workout while in a fun, social atmosphere can improve people’s outlook on their day.
Don’t use the excuse of ‘I don’t know how to dance.’ This is why you have an instructor take the lead. At most gyms they offer an array of dance classes. Our personal favorite is Zumba. It’s a mixture of latin-dance moves with aerobic steps. Be prepared to shake sweat and work your core in that class!
So whether you’re in a studio or in front of the stereo in your living room, when your old gym or fitness routine has got ya down, try to find that rhythm inside and just dance- we know we will!
