Four Core Yoga Preps and How to get Started

Back to school means back to the mat!  Whether you are a yoga newbie or a yogi that has lost their practice, its time to get back into the swing of things!  I have put together a few key items to jumpstart you into your yoga journey!  They are easy and so is yoga, so don’t be scared to get started!

Get a mat!
And don’t be cheap. A cheap mat is like buying a car without wheels….it will get you nowhere fast!  Manduka, in my opinion, is by far the best mat out there! If you have knee problems, get an extra thick mat. Another trick is to double the mat up when you are doing poses where your knees are down. If you have a bit of a sweaty problem go buy yourself a yogi toes towel to cover your mat. It not only sops up the sweat, it also prevents slipping.

Find a studio that suits you.
Most studios have an introductory offer, first week for $20. Super low commitment, plus it gives you a week to try out all the studio’s teacher.  For example Yoga Works has a special right now, 2 weeks of yoga for $30.  This is an amazing deal, hence at some studios one class can run almost $20!

Find your yoga style!
There are all different styles of yoga. Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Iyengar and Bikram are just a few. They are all different so talk with the receptionist at the front desk, tell her about your physical conditions, how you like to exercise, what you looking for from yoga (flexibility, lower stress levels, strength). I have a Vinyasa flow teacher that I have traveled across America for, she is amazing! When you find that teacher you hold onto him or her and take as many classes you can. A good teacher is key to finding your place in the yoga world.

Last but not least, have fun!
Yoga is fun, don’t take yourself seriously. Play on your mat and if you fall out of an arm balance or topple over in a headstand laugh about it! It happens to everyone. Yoga means union, so unite with your inner being and enjoy yourself inside and out!

PS.  Write back and tell me how it goes!  I am here to answer questions and help you in your yoga journey.

Cheers My Dears!

Kelly

  • Look Good, Feel GoodFall is finally here! Time to dig up those scarves, boots, and cardigans buried deep inside your closet. In terms of fashion, this is definitely my favorite time of year – I especially love the bold pops of color that are trending this season. And of course, the layers! But unfortunately, being bundled up in sweaters and coats doesn’t quite give me the motivation to work out. I won’t be sporting a bikini any time soon anyways so what’s the point, right? Wrong! We’re all aiming for that perfect beach body once Spring rolls along, so why not start working for it now? Getting toned and fit is a gradual process—although I’m sure we all wish it would happen overnight. Swimsuit season will be coming around the corner before you know it, so save yourself from the intense dieting and exercise the week before spring break and start now!
