Here's to Finding a Cure!

This past Sunday, my two girlfriends and I decided to participate in Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, a worldwide event that raises awareness and support in fighting breast cancer. With passion and determination we joined thousands of other Orange County residents who have also been personally affected by this disease. Men, women, and children walked and ran toward finding a cure, a promise Nancy G. Brinker made to her sister Susan G. Komen, who unfortunately lost her battle to breast cancer. Since their promise to one another, Komen for the Cure has become the most prominent organization in the fight against breast cancer.

The national and international affects of the organization have proven to be monumental! And let me tell you, there was no better way to end the weekend than coming together as a community, knowing how many people are behind finding a cure. Having lost my cousin a few years ago to breast cancer it’s comforting to know that so many people are helping to raise awareness and make a difference.

Even companies, like Swimspot, are finding their own way to contribute. This past swim season Swimspot, in collaboration with Kimera Restaurant, had the '12 Days of Celebration and Awareness.' This included a Girls Night Out event, a fashion show, in store raffles. In addition, 15% of in store sales were donated to the Orange County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure during the week of June 29 – July 10th.

Having cancer and doing nothing is not the answer. Not helping your friends or family who are afflicted is not an option. Do you see where I’m going? We all need to do something to fight cancer head-on and raise awareness. So grab some of your close friends and family members and find a race near you. Make a day out of it! Even if you haven't been personally affected by the disease it is out there; with every person who helps raising awareness and funds for the cause, we’re able to get one step closer to finding a cure. In addition, remember to take care of yourself and get checked. Like Komen for the Cure has promised to find a cure, make a promise to yourself to be active and stay on top of your health.

Here’s to finding a cure!

In terms of fashion, this is definitely my favorite time of year – I especially love the bold pops of color that are trending this season. And of course, the layers! But unfortunately, being bundled up in sweaters and coats doesn’t quite give me the motivation to work out. I won’t be sporting a bikini any time soon anyways so what’s the point, right? Wrong!
