Nikki’s Travel Tips for the Health- Minded Traveler

I have to travel quite a bit for work. And I’m kind of addicted to travelling for fun too. What can I say, I love a good airport. A lot of my trips are short and sweet. So I wanted to share some healthy travel tips you can put into action ASAP.

Whether you are traveling for work or fun, don’t let your hard work at the gym go down the drain. It’s hard enough to keep up with smart eating and calorie torching exercise routines during a normal week at home, let alone if you throw travelling in the mix.  Here are some of my personal tips to keep the fat at bay and your energy high while travelling.

Sneakers, Sneakers, Sneakers
If you are headed somewhere and know you are going to have some time to exercise, PLAN for a long walk in the city or a trip to the gym. But if you are flying to and fro for a 24-hour quick work trip, take advantage of your time in the airport; the concourse can become your own personal track or trail. Shoes are key. Wear your sneaks and hit the pavement. Walk the concourse. Find some stairs – up and down you go. You would be amazed how quickly you can get your heart rate up just by using your airport environs.  Now we aren’t recommending that you sweat through your clothes, but walk-the-walk.

H20
You’ve heard it before and you’ll hear it again – stay hydrated. Keep that water bottle by your side and don’t lose sight of it. Be sure to drink plenty before, during and after your flight. Trust me. You’ll be thanking me later. And drink more water than you think you need. Flying at a high altitude can accelerate your path to dehydration. DRINK! Oh, and alcohol is your enemy. But don’t become a prude. There is always a time and a place. Just be smart.

No Caffeine When You Fly!
Enough said. If you have to work and stay alert, eat an apple. Get up and walk around the plane. Stay away from caffeine for all the obvious reasons.

Healthy Snacking
When in a time crunch at the airport or at your destination, do everything in your power to not stuff your face with greasy, quick fast food. Like your mother when you were 10, pack a lunch – a smart and healthy lunch that is balanced with protein, grains, and fruit/veggies. In need of a fast snack - my favorite is Luna Bars (lots of flavors to mix it up). Also, drinking plenty of water will help curb the urge to splurge. Yes, I did just throw a rhyme your way!

By practicing my personal tips you will keep your body looking and feeling its best. Most importantly enjoy your trip whether it’s for business or pleasure.

Xoxo-

  • Look Good, Feel GoodFall is finally here! Time to dig up those scarves, boots, and cardigans buried deep inside your closet. In terms of fashion, this is definitely my favorite time of year – I especially love the bold pops of color that are trending this season. And of course, the layers! But unfortunately, being bundled up in sweaters and coats doesn’t quite give me the motivation to work out. I won’t be sporting a bikini any time soon anyways so what’s the point, right? Wrong! We’re all aiming for that perfect beach body once Spring rolls along, so why not start working for it now? Getting toned and fit is a gradual process—although I’m sure we all wish it would happen overnight. Swimsuit season will be coming around the corner before you know it, so save yourself from the intense dieting and exercise the week before spring break and start now!
