Take out your pink ribbons – I have – because October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and it’s our job as women to help eradicate this disease! In the US alone, 1 out of every 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and 1 in 35 women will die from the terribly invasive disease. And girls, the disease doesn’t just attack us; it can also be contracted by your man. So we all need to stay aware of screening techniques to help ensure early detection when possible. These statistics sound grim, so it’s in everyone’s best interests to support Breast Cancer Awareness - cancer is definitely not a picky eater. Thank goodness so many companies and individuals champion the cause and raise significant awareness and funds. Here are two companies that are championing the cause and some of my recommendations on how to raise awareness on a local, one-to-one level. All-American brand Ralph Lauren has a Pink Pony collection – yes, the classic Polo icon is pink! Proceeds from sales of items in the collection are designated into the Pink Pony Fund and then distributed to charities around the world in support of breast cancer research, as well as providing screening and education to parts of the world where that is not readily available.

Remember those “I like it on____” Facebook statuses about your purse? We filled in the place we liked to put our purses in the blank, and had all the guys guessing what it meant. Here’s a chance to win a new purse from Kooba, a leading boutique accessories company based out of NYC. By donating to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, you can win a Kooba bag of your choice! How sweet is that? All you have to do is donate here, and then send the digital receipt you get to chris@kooba.com to be entered in this contest. Definitely spend time on Susan G. Komen’s website learning about the depth of programs and fundraisers the 20 year organization runs on a yearly basis.

Personally, you can also take “style” initiative and celebrate pink in your own personal way. Here are some approaches I’ve used in the past and plan on bringing back this month. October is the perfect opportunity for those of us who are obsessed with pink to whip out all our pink clothes, and for those who don’t enjoy pink, don’t be shy, you’re supporting an amazing cause. It’s so easy, wear a pink shirt so everyone can remember this important month. If wearing pink regularly is too much for you, try sporting a Susan G. Komen pink wrist band that you can buy on their website. This wrist band will go with every outfit you have, and will declare your passion for this cause. It would go fantastic with a Susan G. Komen Race to a Cure t-shirt. Proceeds from these products would go to breast cancer research. If you live in a cold environment, and a t-shirt just doesn’t sound too comfortable in the weather, you can wear a bright pink American Apparel ski cap to keep your ears warm and give everyone a heads up about breast cancer month. If you live in California like I do and have nice swimsuit weather year in October (except the rainy week now), wearing a pink bathing suit is so cute and chic! Shop away on SwimSpot.com for the perfect pink swimwear, and be ready to strut your stuff either at the beach, in the Jacuzzi, or swimming laps in the pool. This pink bikini will be a fantastic way to help spread the cause. Here’s a gorgeous pink bikini from Hurley that will really get everyone’s attention.

Ok. Pink is important for all of us to show-off. Pink is pretty. Pink is important. And pink during the month of October looks fabulous on all of us! I’m doing my part. What are you doing to help raise awareness?
