What is Cystic Fibrosis?
Cystic fibrosis is an inherited fatal disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 70,000 children and young adults worldwide (30,000 domestically). The average lifespan for people with CF who live to adulthood is approximately 35 years.
What is Pipeline to a Cure?
The Pipeline to a Cure Campaign was created by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to herald the discovery by Australian researchers who found that CF patients that surfed and SUP’d had significantly healthier lungs. Doctors determined that inhaling saltwater mist has a powerful effect on rehydrating the lining of the lungs, which allows CF patients to more easily eliminate bacteria-contaminated mucus.
The Pipeline Campaign helps to raise awareness for the cause, leading to increased fundraising. Those funds are then invested on research to develop a cure to CF and for treatments to improve the quality of life of those afflicted. Additionally, the funding supports ongoing programs where CF patients are afforded the opportunity to participate in water sports.
