Stop Daydreaming at Work

Caught daydreaming at work? Ever walked into a room and forget why you entered? Frustrating but normal. Boredom, fatigue and stress have been nabbed as the culprits that let your mind wander all day. Here are some tips to corral your brainpower and remain focused, especially at work!

Organize your work area. Let’s face it, Monday morning rolls around and your boss drops off twenty things that need to be done by end of week, and it’s a little overwhelming. Where to start? Decide what is most crucial and set the rest aside. De-clutter your area nixing extra work, emails, memos and anything else that reminds you that you are behind. Take your day one task at a time and you will be less likely to space out.

Ask questions. If you are known for spacing out during long work meetings try this tip. Ask questions related to the topic. This will challenge you to stay on task and register what is being said. Heck you might even impress a few coworkers with your participation which could lead to a promotion!

Write it down. Are you known for being a worrywart? Channel all your worries onto paper. Write down all things that are bothering you or causing you to daydream at work. List ways to address each issue and then move on. This will put your worries on the back burner and allow you to focus on the task at hand.

Take a break. Do you keep re-reading the same paragraph? This isn’t memory loss, it’s actually mindless reading. Your eyes move across the page, but you’re not thinking about the text because your head is in the clouds. Try taking short breaks when you have to get through longer articles, and recap what you just read to stay on track.

Do Puzzles. Keep your mind young by doing basic puzzles or Sudoku. This not only passes the time if you are a train commuter, but will also sharpen your mind. Download a new brain buster to your iPhone weekly with this app.

By de-cluttering your desk, participating more in meetings and taking short breaks you will be able to cut down on mind wandering. This will lead to being more productive at work. Save the daydreaming for laying out by the pool while you're wearing your reef bathing suit.
