SwimSpot and Wahoos for the Cure

We love the Pipeline to a Cure!!! We love the Getting Air program!!! We love the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation!!!

SwimSpot and Wahoos are joining hands to raise money for Pipeline to a Cure, an organization that benefits the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. We’re very excited to be part of this great and noble cause to improve the lives of those with Cystic Fibrosis and the continual search for a cure. Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system found in children and young adults and may cause early death. More than 70,000 people worldwide (30k in the US), with most under the age of 20, are afflicted. We want to raise awareness. We want to raise money. We are going to fight. Fight alongside us! On July 31st, Pipeline to a Cure will host their 3rd Annual Benefit Gala supporting the CF Foundation.

SwimSpot and Wahoos will be hosting special events on June 3 and July 15 at SwimSpot’s newly opened retail store at the Irvine Spectrum Center®. Come and enjoy entertainment, Wahoos food and drink, giveaways and so much more. At each event from 6-9 p.m. 15% of all sale proceeds will go to Pipeline to a Cure. Attendees can also make a direct donation to the CF Foundation who will be on hand to share their story and mission. The fundraising doesn’t just happen at the June 3 and July 15 events! Every day between now and July 31, when a purchase is made on swimspot.com and the promo code PIPELINE is used, 15% is donated to the CF Foundation. Additionally, anyone who visits the Irvine Spectrum Pop-up Store and states they want 15% of their sale to go to the cause will also trigger a 15% donation.

In addition to the gala, volunteers associated with Pipeline to a Cure will stage events year-round. Among other things, local Pipeline volunteer surfers take kids stricken with CF surfing. The cool salty air aids in helping the kids breathe more freely – which directly and positively enhances their quality of life. Pipeline and CF on June 24 are taking the kids back out to surf. The event is just the beginning of a much bigger program aptly titled Getting Air. The SwimSpot team will be on hand, volunteering, providing parents with free yoga lessons – thanks Athena Ambassador Kelly Paul – and doing everything we can to celebrate the surf experience.

So there you have it: SwimSpot and Wahoos are definitely digging in to support the journey of improving the lives of those with Cystic Fibrosis and the ongoing search for a cure.  Here is what the Southern California Chapter President Paul Motenko of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation had to say:

“It’s so great to see a company that cares about helping people in need.  When Swimspot learned about the health benefits of the ocean and surfing to people with cystic fibrosis, they were on board 100%.  With the help of community-minded companies like Swimspot, we are hoping that one day soon CF will stand for Cure Found.”

Come along for the ride. Make a difference. Step up. Step out. GET AIR.

Here is more information and history behind Pipeline to a Cure:
Pipeline to a Cure benefits The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in the efforts to add tomorrows every day to those affected by this disease and to ultimately find a cure. After Australian researchers found that children with CF who surfed had significantly healthier lungs, Pipeline to a Cure was formed. Researchers noted that inhaling salt water mist has a powerful effect on rehydrating the lining of the lungs, which in turn helps kill bacteria-contaminated mucus in CF patients. Who would have thought that surfing would battle a disease? When professional and legendary surfers Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama heard that surfing could help CF patients, they joined the cause and became honorary chairmen of CFF in 2008. Other professional surfers have united in this cause. July 31st is the third annual Pipeline to a Cure Gala that is an evening filled with entertainment, food, silent auctions, and of course everyone’s favorite surfers. This evening is meant to celebrate and recognize the positive effects of surfing for those affected by this disease. Go to Pipeline’s website to learn more of this awesome events and how you can help.

Here is more information and history behind the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation:
The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is a non-profit organization that has been assuring the cure and control of the cystic fibrosis since 1955. Until a cure for this disease is found, the people of this organization fight to improve and elongate the lives of those with cystic fibrosis. In 1955 when CFF was established, children with this disease were not expected to live past elementary school. Now, the predicted median age is 37 and with hope and hard work this age will keep moving up. This foundation is built on success and thrives on hope in action. There are more than 80 chapters and branch offices with scientist blazing new trails in their research, fund-raisers securing money, advocates maintaining CFF as a top priority in the government, and investors funding the drug discovery and development. In 2009 nearly 90% of all the money donated was invested in their research. This foundation is heralded by The National Institute of Health, Forbes, USA Today, and many others on CFF innovative business model. Go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation website to find out how you can help and here is how SwimSpot and Wahoos are going to help.
