Earth Day is this week! As Sun Lovers, we know that nothing is more important than a healthy and happy home planet - which is what Earth Day is all about!
According to livescience.com, the first Earth Day took place in 1970 after a massive oil spill took place in Santa Barbara, California in 1969 and caused immense damage to the environment. The event inspired the organization of a day that focused on educating the public about the importance of preserving the environment for generations to come. Groups that had been formed against polluting factories, oil spills, raw sewage, pesticides, toxic dumps and the loss of wilderness and extinction of wild animals realized that they shared common values and came together to promote environmental citizenship all year round, according to EarthDay.org.
Today, as we approach our 46th Earth Day, our generation is taking further action to ensure that our home planet continues to thrive. There’s a ton of things you can do to celebrate Earth Day, but the most important thing is to get outside and celebrate everything that our home planet has to offer. We’ve put together a list of 5 of our favorite outdoor activities that will help you get out, get active and commemorate Earth Day!
1. Stand Up Paddle Boarding
Our number one outdoor activity would have to be Stand Up Paddle boarding - or SUP! Not only is SUP’ing super relaxing and fun, but it also provides a full body workout at the same time. Whether you go out on the lake, river or ocean, SUP’ing is the ideal for soaking up the sun and scenery on Earth Day. It’s also super easy to learn and fun for all ages - All you need is a board and a paddle and you’re ready to hit the water! SUP alone, with your love or in a group, some people even bring their dogs along for the ride!
Another activity we love is surfing! Even though it’s a bit more challenging than SUP’ing, we love the adrenaline of catching and riding the perfect wave. Water covers about 70% of the Earth- which provides endless amounts of ocean and beautiful surfing locations. Reef advocate, pro surfer Tia Blanco, will be competing in the US Open of Surfing and trying to qualify for the world tour this coming year, surfing in the most beautiful places the Earth has to offer. All you need is a board, bikini or one piece, rash guard, sunscreen and some confidence. Whether you’re an avid surfer or a beginner eager to try it out for the first time, Earth Day is the perfect excuse for getting out and enjoying the ocean- which is why it’s so important to keep it clean! If you’re just starting out, remember that almost every surfer started on a small wave.
Take a hike! No, seriously. One of the simplest Earth Day activities you can do is get out and take a hike. The best part about hiking is that you can do it almost anywhere- the best trails are often closer than you think, just do a quick internet search in your area to find the closest hiking spots. Grab your best friend, a bottle of water, sunscreen and hiking shoes and go out and appreciate Earth’s natural landscapes!
4. Organize A Clean Up
A great way to contribute to the cause while still enjoying the day is to organize or attend a beach or park clean-up. There may be pre-planned clean-ups in your area (just google “Earth Day clean up”), or you can even call up your friends and create your own clean up! Head over to your favorite beach, lake, river or park and soak up the sunshine while also giving back to Earth. You’ll be surprised at how much of a difference you can make by picking up a few bags of trash that has been left behind! The Earth and the animals that live there will thank you. :)
5. Have A Beach Day
So this might be the easiest thing you can do- but you can celebrate Earth Day by having a beach day! Slowing down to notice and appreciate the beauty of the beach will give you a better understanding of just how important it is to take care of our planet. If you’re like us, the beach is your happy place, and we want to keep it as beautiful as possible, So take some time to explore and appreciate the beach this Earth Day! Grab your sunnies, sun screen, towel and slip into your favorite designer swimsuit and head to the beach to soak up the sun – Everyone can use some Vitamin Sea!
